ARE YOUR PRINTS SOLD IN LIMITED EDITIONS?
Prints from this online gallery are sold as unsiged, Open Edition prints.
If you are interested in a signed, Limited Edition print, please contact us through the site. A current CLOSER Limited Edition collection of Dibond mounted fine art prints in size 30” x 45” is being sold by Alp Galleries in Frankfurt, Germany.
I may establish future Limited Editions. Right now I am focused on Open Editions and mass reproduction of my collection.
HOW WAS THE CLOSER COLLECTION SHOT?
The CLOSER Project was shot over the course of a decade, entirely on 35mm film, and largely on Kodachrome.
The now extinct celebrity among color slide films, Kodachrome is non-substantive; its emulsion layers are thinner and less light is scattered upon exposure, meaning that the film can record an image with more brightness, sharpness, and vibrant color values than substantive films can. It made for the perfect partner in capturing the CLOSER collection, and the extinction of this film adds to its unique value.
All film was scanned at high resolution to produce files capable of producing clean and consistent print reproductions at large scale.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FOR PRINTED IMAGE DEFINITION?
As expressed above, The CLOSER Project was shot on 35mm film and scanned at high resolution. While professional attention has been given to the image preparation process, the “raw material” of this collection remains “vintage” in nature; it wasn’t captured by high definition digital cameras.
What does this mean? The larger the print you purchase, the more optimal its viewing distance will be from further back. However, you may rest assured that I only offer each print up to the size that will ensure its quality printing. You will see no “pixels” ever. If the size is available, you will get a quality print.
Additionally, given the work is abstract and often painterly in nature, its subjectivity and slightly grainy quality lends itself to a more forgiving reproduction process than you’d find with, say, human photographic portraiture.
WILL MY IMAGE OF CHOICE PRINT THE WAY IT LOOKS ON MY SCREEN?
A print can never demonstrate the same vibrancy and brightness that a “backlit” visual on a screen can. There are also color values that showcase well in digital format that simply cannot output to printed form without some loss in saturation or apparent hue alteration. This is particularly true in the case of some blues and any colors on the “neon” spectrum. Finally, every screen is calibrated differently and has different monitor settings, meaning the way a visual looks on one screen may differ from the way it looks on another.
We feel it is our job to ensure that any variations between screen view and printed work are as minimal as possible, and to ensure that you receive a handsome, high quality print.
This means that, in addition to calibrating our monitors and using the color profiles requested by our printers, we print from files that have been adjusted based on multiple test printing rounds afforded each image of the CLOSER collection.
